University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust has chosen Connectvision from Saturn Communications Group Ltd for a hospital-wide multimedia messaging network involving 150 large LCD screens and over 4,750 desktop PCs. It will be one of the UK's largest digital signage networks when it comes into operation later this year.
Effective internal and visitor communication is a constant challenge for University Hospital Birmingham (UHB). On a typical day more than 10,000 staff, patients and visitors will be in the hospital at some time. Often the most difficult audiences to reach are consultants, nurses and allied workers who work various shifts, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week in areas where access to, and the ability to, absorb communication is difficult.
A review of UHB internal communications revealed that email, posters and notice boards were not an effective means of communicating, especially in the event of an emergency, in such a busy hospital setting. “Trust notice boards can be full of stale content and awash with non relevant “unauthorised” material which fails to reflect the dynamic communication aspirations of University Hospital Birmingham. This is why we’ve selected Connectvision for our multimedia and digital signage applications,” said the director of ICT, UHB.
Connectvision will allow UHB to improve and enhance their communications to reach all of its staff, patients and visitors quickly, easily and efficiently using a “real time” push communications channel that provides timely guaranteed message accuracy and consistency. “It will provide a digital signage and communication network through which we can rapidly update, authorise, schedule and target messages for different audiences, at different times in specific locations,” he noted.
Digital signage and multimedia communications will be used to supplement an overall internal and visitor communications strategy within UHB and will include team briefing news, hospital news, restaurant menus, health & safety alerts, staff training and workshop course bulletins, local transport and weather information, national news feeds, security alerts, for example.
“This is a challenging and important communications project given the many audiences at UHB and their information requirements. Connectvision is a proven multimedia messaging solution for just this kind of environment, enabling organisations to cut through the 'noise' of a busy workplace to give people the messages that matter,” said Chris Welsh, managing director, Saturn Communications Group Ltd.
